The ACAAI Foundation allocated $155,000 in 2009 for Young Faculty Support Awards, Scholars Return Awards, the Robert Scanlon Lecture and an emergency fellowship stipend to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston after Hurricane Ike – in addition to supporting the Consortium on Children’s Asthma Camps through the second year of its 2-year grant.
Anupama Kewalramani, MD, University of Maryland Hospital for Children in Baltimore, recipient of the Young Faculty Award, wrote: “This grant provided funding to start the eosinophilic esophagitis clinic that I run with the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology. We now are the only clinic of its kind in the state of Maryland to provide skin testing and patch testing to eosinophillic esophagitis patients.”
Ann M. Wanner, MD, FACAAI, recipient of the Scholars Return Award, wrote: “Not only did I learn a lot, but to my surprise, Itaught a lot. The exchange opened up to those practicing in academia my real world experiences, and challenges and successes. I really felt that it was a win-win situation.”
"The Foundation announced the establishment of the Jean Chapman Endowment Fund for Education during the November ACAAI Annual Meeting, and we’ve already received $3,000 in contributions,” said ACAAI Foundation President Betty B. Wray, M.D., FACAAI. “Gifts may be designated for this fund honoring Dr. Chapman, one of our past presidents who was completely dedicated to promoting our specialty to residents and students.”
“Support from the 5K Club and 10K Club is vital for continuing to help meet the increasing needs for educational support within our specialty. I urge all members who are dedicated to the highest standards of clinical practice to place the Foundation among your top charities. Together we can have a positive impact on the future of our specialty,” Dr. Wray said.
The Foundation recognizes Stephen J. Pollard, MD, FACAAI, Louisville, Ky., for achieving the 5K Club status for contributions of at least $5,000. Dr. Pollard said, “There is a critical need for the future of our specialty and our practices to support our training programs and our colleagues doing basic research. I am proud to contribute to the Foundation to help ongoing funding of these good works.”
Members of the 5K Club and 10K Club who make their pledge are acknowledged at each Annual Meeting with a special ribbon and listings in the Convention Program Guide and the Foundation Honor Roll display.
Donors reach their goal by contributing in a variety of ways including cash donations, participation in the Tithe-a-Talk program, through a contribution of stock, charitable trusts/bequests, and even donations to the Silent Auction sponsored by the Alliance.
