Sami Bahna Installed as ACAAI President
Dana Wallace becomes President-Elect

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Sami L. Bahna, M.D., Dr.PH., Shreveport, La., was installed as president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) at the ACAAI Annual Meeting in Miami Beach on Nov. 10, 2009.

Other elected officers are:  Dana V. Wallace, M.D., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., president-elect; Stanley M. Fineman, M.D., M.B.A., Marietta, Ga., vice president; and Michael B. Foggs, M.D., Chicago, treasurer. Elected as Regents for three-year terms are: Kevin P. McGrath, M.D., Wethersfield, Conn.; Talal M. Nsouli, M.D., Washington, D.C.; and James M. Seltzer, M.D., Worchester, Mass.

Dr. Sami Bahna is professor of pediatrics and medicine and chief of the Allergy/Immunology Section at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, La.

He is serving his second terms on the ACAAI Board of Regents, 1988-1991 and 2007-present; on the Executive Committee, 1991 and 2007-present; and on the Nominating Committee, 1992 and 2003. He also was on the Board of Directors of the Joint Council of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 1997-1999. He chaired the Allergy/Immunology Training Program Directors’ Planning Committee, the Annual Program Committee and the International Food Allergy Symposium Committee; is an associate editor of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology; and is a member of numerous other committees. He served on several NIH committees and three terms on the Executive Committee of the AAP-Section on Allergy & Immunology.

In addition to several national and international honors and awards, Dr. Bahna received the ACAAI’s Distinguished Service Award, 2005; the Distinguished Fellow Award, 2004; the International Distinguished Fellow Award, 1992; and the Clemens von Pirquet Award, 1978. He presented the 2004 John P. McGovern Lecture, the 1996 Bernard Berman Memorial Lecture and the 1988 Bela Schick Lecture. He also received the Leonard Tow 2005 Humanism in Medicine Award by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.

Dr. Bahna is author or co-author of more than 270 publications, served on the editorial boards of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, Allergy & Asthma Proceedings, Allergologia et Immunopathologia and Pediatrics, and is a reviewer for numerous prestigious journals.  He is frequently invited as visiting professor at major institutions and speaker at major national and international meetings.

Dr. Dana Wallace is assistant clinical professor at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Fla., and is a private practitioner in allergy, asthma and clinical immunology in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

She is serving her second term on the ACAAI Board of Regents, 2002-05 and 2008-present, and on the Executive Committee, 2003-05 and 2008-present. She chairs the Acorn Committee, Drugs and Anaphylaxis Committee, Pharmaceutical Communications Bureau, Symposium Committee and Web Site Planning Committee, and is a member of numerous committees. She is ACAAI’s representative on the Health Level 7 (HL7) Clinical Interoperability Council; has served on the Annals of Allergy Manuscript Review Committee since 2005; has been a Nationwide Asthma Screening Program coordinator since 2000; and has been on the Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters since 2005 and was chief editor of "The Diagnosis and Management of Rhinitis: An updated Practice Parameter."  Her many honors include the 2008 Bela Schick lectureship and the 2007 Women in Allergy Award.

She is secretary/treasurer of Broward County Medical Association, is on its executive committee and served as its Delegate to the Florida Medical Association since the 1980s. Dr. Wallace is past president of the Florida Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Association, and current president of Women Physicians of South Florida. Her other previous appointments include the Florida Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Association’s Executive Committee and chair of its Practice Standards Committee; the Florida Medical Association Council on Medical Education and Science; and the Florida State Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Stanley Fineman is in private practice with the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic and has a teaching appointment as clinical associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Allergy at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

He served three terms as ACAAI treasurer since 2006 and his second term on the Board of Regents, 1997-2000 and 2007-present. He has served as Foundation Board treasurer; chair of the Finance Committee and Managed Care Key Contact Network; was recently reappointed to the editorial board of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology; is on the editorial board of AllergyWatch; and is a member of the Executive Committee and numerous other committees.

Dr. Fineman was honored with the ACAAI’s Distinguished Fellow Award, 2000; the  Distinguished Service Award, 1999; and the 1999 Mittelstaedt lectureship. He was president of the Joint Council of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 2004-06, and co-chaired the Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters. He has also served as president of the Cobb County Medical Society, the Southeastern Allergy Association, the Allergy and Immunology Society of Georgia and the Cobb Area Pediatric Society.

Dr. Michael Foggs is chief of allergy & immunology, Advocate Medical Group of Advocate Health Care, Chicago, Illinois.

He served on the ACAAI Board of Regents, 2005-08, and chairs the Managed Care and Health Plans Committee. He is on the editorial board of  Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, and is ACAAI’s representative on the Board of Directors of the Joint Council of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 2008-2012. He is a member of the Annual Program Committee, Communications Council, Marketing Committee, Membership Recruitment Committee, Task Force on Nominating Procedures and former chair and member of the Public Relations Network. He was honored with the 2008 Stanislaus Jaros Lectureship.

Dr. Foggs is on the FDA Pulmonary-Allergy Drugs Advisory Committee (PADAC), 2006-2010, and is a member of the Expert Panel 3 of the NHLBI National Asthma Education Prevention Program responsible for writing the Guidelines for the Diagnosis & Management of Asthma. He serves on the World Allergy Organization’s Asthma Special Committee; on the American Board of Medical Specialties Workgroup, "Characterizing Episodes & Cost of Care Workshop on Asthma;" on the National Institutes of Health Asthma Outcomes Workshop Quality of Life Committee; on the Executive Committee of the Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Section, and the Consensus Panel on Asthma in the African American Community of the National Medical Association.

Dr. Kevin McGrath is active attending at St. Vincent Medical Center in Bridgeport, Conn.; assistant clinical professor, Department of Medicine, St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Hartford; and in private practice at Adult and Pediatric Allergy & Asthma of Connecticut in Fairfield and Wethersfield. He served on the ACAAI Board of Regents, Speaker of the House of Delegates 2007-2009. He co-chairs the Membership Recruitment Committee and serves on the Public Education & Outreach Committee. He previously chaired the Primary Care Training Program Committee and Geriatrics Committee, and served as Delegate to the ACAAI House of Delegates, 1997-2007. He is past president of the American Association of Certified Allergists, 2007-08.

Dr. Talal Nsouli is clinical professor of pediatrics and allergy/immunology, and Distinguished Research Scientist at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Immunology, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C; director of Watergate and Burke Allergy and Asthma Centers in Washington, D.C. and Burke, Va.; and allergy consultant for the White House Medical Office, having served as President Bill Clinton’s personal allergist. Dr. Nsouli is vice chair of the ACAAI International Committee and chairs the Middle East/Africa Portfolio; he chaired the local Nationwide Asthma Screening Program since 1998; and he is on the Editorial Board of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology since 1998. He is past president of the Greater Washington Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Society, 2005-06.

Dr. James Seltzer is in practice at the Fallon Clinic in Worchester, Mass. He chairs the ACAAI Indoor Allergy Environment Committee and is a member of the Scientific Council. A consultant to industry and to government, including the Indoor Air Quality division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Seltzer is a well-known speaker on topics relating to how the environment affects health and has participated in numerous government sponsored programs. He serves on the AAP’s Executive Committee of the Council on Environmental Health and is the co-director of the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit at the University of California, Irvine serving EPA Region 9, where he is professor of medicine.
