Allergist Janna Tuck, MD: It’s not always allergic, believe it or not. Some patients have postnasal drip and they’ve been treated with allergy medications and they don’t get better. That might be because it isn’t caused by allergies. Patients can have post-nasal drip caused by acid reflux. It can also be caused by their own bodies, and it’s not allergies. That’s called nonallergic rhinitis.

So if you go to see an allergist, you can discuss your symptoms. There are several different medications that can be used to treat postnasal drip, which is a very annoying symptom. And an allergist might get your symptoms under control, which would improve your quality of life, and believe me, postnasal drip controlled is a wonderful thing!
