Allergist Jonathan Olsen, MD: Allergies can develop later in life. What happens is, as the body ages, the immune system ages. The body can recognize something in the environment, for example, a tree pollen, and recognize it as something foreign that mounts an allergic response.
So that’s what leads to nasal congestion, drainage, sneezing, itchy, watery eyes. And there can be a few things that could trigger that. One of those could be moving to a new environment or getting a new pet or maybe changing your occupation.
But the important thing is, if you’re bothered by that, an allergist can help you, and they can test you and see if there’s something that they can discover as far as what you’re allergic to.
