Can my child with asthma play in school sports?

English Transcript

Allergist Mitchell Grayson, MD: Your child with asthma can absolutely participate in school sports. The important thing is to make sure that their asthma is under control. The way you get your child’s asthma under control is to go see your allergist and make sure that their asthma is being properly treated.

When they take their appropriate controller medications, and they have their asthma to control, they can participate in any sport they want to. They may have to take an inhaler before they exercise sometimes, but your allergist can tell you whether that’s required or not.

The important thing to remember is that when you take the medications properly, your child with asthma can participate in any type of sport that they enjoy.
