Do I need to use my inhaler every day?

English Transcript

Allergist Kylie Jungles, MD: So, it really depends what type of inhaler you’ve been prescribed by your physician. We have two different types of inhaler classes. One are rescue inhalers. Those are ones that you take as needed if you’re sick or if you’re having an asthma flare or prior to exercise, such as albuterol.

There are also controller inhalers. That’s your daily inhaler that can be taken once a day, twice a day, depending on how it’s been prescribed. Your controller inhaler should be taken every day regardless if you’re sick or well.

These medicines have a longer acting component, and it’s important to use them as on a daily basis to prevent inflammation in your lungs, so that if you become sick, you’re less likely to have an a severe flare.

There also have been other medications such as AirSupra or smart therapy with Simbacort and sometimes those medications are used as both a rescue and a controller. So, it’s really important to talk with your physician on when they would like you to take that inhaler to be sure that you’re taking it as prescribed.
