Allergist Karla Adams, MD: So, it’s really common to get local reactions after bee stings or fire ant stings. Typically, they’re self-limiting, little bit of redness of swelling at the site. You can treat that with non-steroidal medications, ice packs.
But it doesn’t mean you need allergy shots. Allergy shots are typically for folks that have allergic or anaphylactic reactions to insect stings where they have difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea.
So, kind of multi-system symptoms. And in that situation, we want to see an allergist so that we can get tested and hopefully get started on allergy shots.
