How are eye allergies different than nasal allergies?

Allergist Sonali Majmudar, MD: Obviously, eye allergies present more in your eyes and nasal allergy symptoms are more in your nose. Eye allergy symptoms include itching, burning, light sensitivity, redness, and definitely itching of the eyelids.

Eye allergy symptoms can present because of pollen allergies, such as tree pollen, grasses, ragweed, or even year-round allergies like dust mites and pets.

When you have symptoms of eye allergies, it would be a good idea to see an allergist because the allergist will be able to identify triggers that would be causing your symptoms by doing a skin test. The skin test will identify what your allergens are and then decide the mode of treatment.

Treatment for eye allergies could include oral antihistamines, such as Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec, Xyol, allergy eye drops, or lubricant eye drops. And if your symptoms are severe, we can also recommend allergy shots, which work to control your symptoms. So go get your allergies checked by an allergist!
