How do I introduce peanut products and egg in order to avoid food allergies?

Allergist Angela Hogan, MD: So if you’re going to introduce peanut – first of all, peanuts in and of themselves are a choking hazard, so we would want to use an age-appropriate peanut product. That would be peanut flour or peanut powder and what you would do is stir some of that into the baby food.

And yeah, I would give first a very small amount, watch the infant for about 10 minutes. Make sure that they’re able to appropriately swallow it and they’re tolerating it. And you would watch for signs of an allergic reaction.

The risk, though, for an allergic reaction is very, very low at this point in their immune system and their development. But signs that you would watch for would be a red rash around the mouth that might have polka dots to it or if they were to vomit. Certainly those would be indications that they’re not tolerating that food.

But the most important thing to know is that almost all infants are going to tolerate this food at this age. And so I would feed it to them, watch them for about 10 minutes. When they tolerate it well, be encouraged to go ahead and finish the initial exposure, and then continue it in the diet with some frequency, so that they’ll go ahead and develop tolerance to that food, and we’ll have a generation of kids that are not allergic to egg and to peanut.
