Every patient gets given an anaphylaxis action plan, and this plan basically states symptoms of mild allergic reactions and symptoms for severe allergic reactions. So if you’re experiencing symptoms that fall into the category of moderate or severe allergic reactions, then you would want to use your epinephrine device. So symptoms like that can be for example difficulty breathing as part of an allergic reaction or having feeling dizzy or having trouble with your blood pressure feeling like hypotensive like you’re going to pass out.

These are examples of when you absolutely need to give yourself your epinephrine.

Now we have various devices nowadays and we want to make sure that everybody knows how to use the device that they own. This is very important when treating anaphylaxis. I often get the question how do I know for sure? Sometimes you don’t know for sure, but if you recognize severe symptoms in yourself or you feel unwell or you feel like the reaction is away from what we would call a mild reaction, feel free to use your epinephrine. It is safe and there are no long-term side effects by using it.

So, we recommend that it is used every time a patient feels like they’re having a severe reaction. It doesn’t necessarily need to fulfill the criteria for anaphylaxis.
