I’m allergic to pollen: How do I keep pollen out of my house?

English Transcript

Allergist J. Allen Meadows, MD: So you’re allergic to pollen. What do we want to do to avoid the pollen? Well, the main thing is to keep the windows of your house closed. Opening the windows of your house for a few hours is not like taking a walk in the park. It’s about like dragging your bed to the tall grass on the interstate and leaving it there permanently.

So even opening the windows in the house for a few hours will lift the pollen in there, because it’s the reproductive part of the plant, and it may last for months afterwards. So don’t open the windows in the house for a few hours.

The other thing, when you’ve been outdoors, all right, and been spending time outdoors, the pollen gets in your hair. So we want to wash our hair in the evening to get the pollen out of it so we don’t sleep with it all night long.
