Allergist Benjamin Prince, MD: Food allergies are definitely more prevalent in young children and can actually be outgrown with age. It is truly possible that you can manifest with an a food allergy as an adult. I think it’s important to differentiate between food allergies, where your immune system is actually activating towards a protein in the food, from a food intolerance, which usually can manifest with more vague symptoms that’s oftentimes delayed.
Food allergies usually are going to manifest with an immediate reaction that’s reproducible. And if it’s an allergic reaction, it’s going to manifest with allergic signs or symptoms such as hives, coughing, difficulty breathing, or vomiting. If you’ve had anything like that, if you’ve experienced an immediate reaction to a food, even as adult, I would encourage you to seek out a board-certified allergist/immunologist in your area who can help do some diagnostic testing and get to the bottom of what might be causing your symptoms.
