Is it true that there is a sublingual epi under FDA review?

English Transcript

Allergist Nicole Chase, MD: Sublingual epinephrine is a really novel concept that we’ve never had exposure to before. This is a medication that’s currently under FDA review and is hopefully going to be available at some point in 2026. The idea here is that the sublingual epinephrine is a little tiny film strip, a very transparent, very small, very thin that basically is impregnated with a molecule that will turn into epinephrine once you actually get it into your bloodstream.

So sublingual just basically means under your tongue. So this would be a strip where you’d open up a little pouch and take this out and just directly insert it underneath your tongue. From there, the medicine would get absorbed into your bloodstream and would act just like epinephrine given through an intramuscular form or an intraasal form.

But because it’s so small and thin, it might be easier for patients to carry and then hopefully to actually use it in the event of an allergic reaction.
