Allergist Lukena Karkhanis, MD: There is a product that is made by a company that can decrease the amount of allergy that your cat will cause. And this is how it works. Most people that are reacting to cats are reacting to a particular protein in the cat’s saliva and the cat’s skin secretions. And this cat food has an antibody that binds that allergic protein.
So when you feed your cat this special cat food over time, in about 3 weeks the amount of the allergic protein can go down by as much as 47% and overall the trouble you’ll have with your cat goes down.
Now you have to keep in mind that this is not a guaranteed cure. It should be part of a bigger strategy along with everything else, like minimizing exposure to cats and taking your medications. Several of my patients have tried this cat food as part of their treatment strategy and they really like it.
