Tell us about early introduction of peanuts

English Transcript

Allergist Michael Pistiner, MD: There was a recent study that showed that things are moving in the right direction. Early introduction is the early introduction of foods that are commonly known as allergens like peanut, eggs, and other foods.

In this particular study, they showed that after 2015, and this was when a groundbreaking study called the LEAP study, Learning Early About Peanut, showed that early introduction of peanut really works to decrease the chance that kids will develop a peanut allergy. And real world evidence hasn’t proven that it’s been working up until now.

And so this study showed that there was impact not only on peanut allergy but then also other food allergies as well. So there was a relative risk reduction of peanut allergy by 43% after that 2015 study, and after guidelines were then implemented and then there was a 36% relative risk reduction in other food allergies too.

So something’s moving in the right direction and this is really important information.
