Allergist Andrea A. Pappalardo, MD: The medicine that you’re going to take if you can’t breathe very well is called a quick relief or reliever inhaler. That’s the one that will help you feel better and able to breathe: open up those lungs in the moment.
On the other hand, the controller medication is one that you may have to take whether you need it or not, whether you have symptoms or whether you’re feeling okay. There still might be some inflammation in those lungs that we need to take care of, and/or you might experience an allergen or something along the way that might require you to have that medicine every day.
And an allergist will really be able to break down which medications are the best for you and sometimes it might be the same one for both. So don’t get confused, just speak about it openly with your allergist and he or she will be able to help you through that.
