Allergist Stanley Fineman, MD: So for a child who has allergies or asthma and they’re starting into school, the parent needs to make sure that the child has the tools that they need if they have a problem with their asthma.
Now what that means is that the parents should go to the school with the child’s action plan, which they get from their doctor, and that can help the child deal with any problems if that develop when they’re at school. And the child should have rescue type medications available so if they do have a problem at school, then they’re able to get treatment, because the parents are not going to be there the whole time.
But an allergy action plan is really the best tool that parent can have and usually you get that from the allergist. There’s a lot of information about how to prepare a child who has allergies on the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology website, which is acaai.org, and that’s a good resource for parents to start.
