Allergist Stanley Fineman, MD: They need to, number one, be aware of their foods that might cause a problem for them. They need to have an epinephrine auto injector available and carry it with them all the time. They need to make sure they inform their roommate about their food allergies so that they don’t have that food in the room and may accidentally get exposed to it, and probably also go to the student infirmary at their college to make sure that they have the resources and know about the child’s limitation and their food allergies.
So it’s very important for the child, the adolescent who’s going off to college to really take control of the management of their allergy by themselves for the first time. It’s a really major step in the child’s maturation process really. And for parents, I frequently recommend that they go to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology website, which is acaai.org, because there are tools there that can help the parent prepare that child so that they’re safe when they go off to college.
