What is an immunologist?

What is an immunologist?

English Transcript

Allergist Niraj Patel, MD: You should see an immunologist when an individual has frequent or recurrent illnesses. When a person has too many illnesses or they have a difficult time recovering from an illness, you might want to see an immunologist. There are certain red flags that can signal an immune system problem. Two or more pneumonias in a calendar year. Difficulty for children to gain weight. If there’s severe infections that land you in the hospital or where you need IV antibiotics, those can all be signs and symptoms of immune system problems.

The good news is that allergists are also trained immunologists.

So when you see an allergist, who you see for asthma or seasonal allergies, they’re also trained at diagnosing and treating immune system problems. And so if you have any of those symptoms, see an allergist. Get diagnosed so that you can get treated and be on the right path.
