What is Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria? How do I know if I suffer from it?

English Transcript

Allergist Curtis Hedberg, MD: CSU, otherwise known as chronic spontaneous urticaria, or for most of us, we know it as hives, is a condition where people will have itching, sometimes pain, and sometimes body part swelling. The fact that it’s spontaneous means that it will come up for no reason at all, and many times can even either appear as small pin prick type rash, or it can even be in a large elevated area off the skin that may be the size of a dinner plate.

How do you know whether or not you have this condition? Well, it’s probably best to discuss it with your your physician or your health care provider. However, if this is something that you keep experiencing again and again, and it’s lasting for several days, or may last several days and go away and then come back, or maybe even something that you experience every day, then very likely you have chronic spontaneous urticaria.
