Allergist Benjamin Prince, MD: Historically, why Type 2 inflammation was important actually had to do with protecting us against parasitic disease. Today’s importance, though, is the underlying mechanism of Type 2 inflammation behind many of our allergic conditions that manifest clinically as atopic dermatitis or eczema, asthma, environmental allergies, food allergies, and even other things such as eosinophilic esophagitis.
It’s important to know that underlying mechanism for a few reasons. So one is patients may develop many of those diseases and if you have one, you’re more likely to manifest with another one. Screening can be important and also, we now have lots of targeted therapies that can target that pathway and are very effective, have better side effects and can oftentimes cure and and treat many of these conditions all at the same time.
So if any of these conditions sound familiar to you, if you’re struggling with allergic diseases, I would definitely encourage you to reach out and seek a board-certified allergist-immunologist who might be able to help you feel better.
