Allergist Amber Hardeman, MD: After a flood or a storm, it’s really important to survey the area to see if you see any standing water, any wet spaces, any visible darkness on any surfaces, or if you smell any musty smell. What’s most important is to dry out the area. So, porous materials such as mattresses and carpets, you may want to remove. You can clean off any hard materials with water or vinegar.
You want to avoid bleach because bleach does cause other toxin effects. Any room that’s greater than a 3×3 area or approximately 10 square feet. You also might want to reach out to a professional because any patient, especially with allergies or asthma, can have a lot of issues after mold exposure, but even patients who don’t have allergy or asthma can have some irritant effects.
So, you always want to make sure that you reach out to your local allergist to give you further assistance in how to improve your health after a storm.
