Allergist Jonathan Olsen, MD: I have quite a few patients that come in and they feel like they’re losing their mind. They’re like, “How is it possible that my allergies are getting worse with each year?” But we’ve found that that’s actually true. What’s happening is with climate change, the pollen season is lasting longer, up to 3 weeks in some places. And we also noticed that plants are producing more pollen and the pollen’s actually becoming more allergenic, because there’s changes with pollutants that are changing that pollen granule. So there’s quite a few things that are responsible for that.
And then there’s also patterns where people are bringing landscaping plants that are not native to the area. They’re actually quite allergenic as well. So there’s quite a few different reasons why you might be noticing that your symptoms are getting worse. But the important thing is, if you notice that, you should see an allergist because they can help you discover some different treatment options and also offer you some testing so you can identify what it is that you’re allergic to.
